Returning to Campus, Navigating Transition, and Achieving Wellness -- SIX Resources to Help YOU Succeed this Fall

October 27, 2021

Greetings, Slugs!

On behalf of the entire Division of Student Affairs and Success, I hope this finds you well and enjoying the start of the 2021-2022 academic year. As we've now reached the midpoint of the fall quarter, I wanted to take a few moments to extend my greetings, offer a few thoughts about the opportunities inherent to a new school year, and highlight a number of resources available to help you succeed in and out of the classroom.
The start of a new year is exciting. With it comes the opportunity to set new goals, pursue new endeavors, and achieve new dreams. As you consider all that you want to accomplish this year (and beyond), we hope you know the Division of Student Affairs and Success exists to support your greatest aspirations. In good times -- and especially in challenging times -- we are here to help you along your journey as a student.

Your success matters to us. That's why we created the UCSC Ecosystem of Care. Designed with you and your unique needs in mind, the Ecosystem of Care offers an array of resources and a plethora of tools to help you thrive on campus and in life. As we start the year, we wanted to take the time to highlight some of the most significant support systems available to you. Therefore, below you will find a list of essential Ecosystem of Care elements as well as notes on how to access each of them. As you review the list, we trust you will take comfort in knowing that we are here for your every need.

Truly, whether you (1) wish to focus on your mental health and well-being, (2) seek campus connection and belonging, (3) require academic guidance, (4) desire career and professional preparedness, (5) need classroom success tips, or simply (6) want to check the latest campus COVID updates, there is something, or someone, available to help you excel in all you do.

By now, you are assuredly settling into your classes, co-curricular activities, and social life. We hope all is going well and that continues in the days, weeks, and months ahead. As you set about your work and chase your dreams, I encourage you to take full advantage of the UCSC Ecosystem of Care and its many offerings. Utilizing the resources available to you will situate you for success now and well into the future.

Resource #1: Wellness and Mental Health

Juggling the many commitments of university life can be hard. Daily, you navigate academic, social, and co-curricular responsibilities. Many of you do this while working and supporting your family. To help you keep up with and make sense of the demands swirling around you, we are pleased to announce UCSC's partnership with YOU @ College. YOU @ College is a powerful, online platform that offers personalized mental health and well-being resources to help you thrive now and in the future. Offering keen insight into a range of topics -- from sleep habits to identity development to career exploration and so much more -- YOU @ College is a versatile, personalized tool that can help you achieve optimal wellness amidst all the challenges university life presents.

Resource #2: Campus Connection and Belonging

Born and raised in a tech saturated world, virtual support such as YOU @ College is an essential tool for today's college student. And, sometimes, we know what students need most is a one-to-one personal connection. The Slug Mentor Network offers exactly that.
Slug Mentors are committed to their mentee's success. They listen to their mentee's concerns, answer their questions, and help them identify opportunities for engagement -- in class, in co-curriculars, and, eventually in their careers. Requesting a Slug Mentor is a great way for your student to find their way at UCSC.
Students can request a mentor by submitting this form.

Resource #3: Academic Guidance and Success

Navigate Slug Success is an online platform that allows students to easily communicate with and make appointments with their academic advisers, connect with student success staff, and access other university support services. Using the Study Buddies function, students can even start or join a study group with other students from their classes. Students should use Navigate to stay connected with their academic support team of advisers, faculty, and campus resources.

Resource #4: Career and Professional Preparation

Whether hoping for a coveted summer internship or preparing for a professional position after graduation, UCSC offers students career development support along every part of their journey. In particular, we are proud to offer all students free access to Handshake. Handshake is an online platform connecting students and alumni with job opportunities and career coaching. To help make the most of your UCSC education, we recommend students activate their accounts now, create their profiles, and update their handshake data at least once a quarter. Taking these steps now can be instrumental to securing that dream job down the road.
