Events and Accommodations for Ramadan

Sunday, May 20, 2018

Many members of our campus community will be observing Ramadan through fasting, prayer, community gatherings, and friendship over the next 30 days.  This message is intended to provide
our campus community with information regarding accommodations as well as special events during Ramadan.

Dining Options: UCSC Dining Services is now offering the Spring 60 meal plan for students who are observing Ramadan. This meal plan is ideal for 5 or 7-day meal plan holders, who would be using the Dining Halls less frequently during this month. Learn about the plan by clicking here.

There will be increased Halal food options at all of the Late Night Dining Halls, as well as access to date palms for students to break their fast with. Find out more here.

For those looking for pre-dawn meal accommodations (suhoor), the following community kitchens are available to on-campus residents:

  • Porter iLounge Community Kitchen: Open from 3am-5am

  • Stevenson Apartment Community Room

  • College 9/10 Community Kitchen: Contact ucsc.msa@gmail.com for access

  • Crown/Merrill Gauss House Kitchen: Contact ucsc.msa@gmail.com for access

Those with meal plans can request a “Ramadan breakfast box” at the dining hall the night before to take out food for suhoor.

Prayer Accommodations: For individual daily prayers, ISB 475 (Interdisciplinary Sciences Building) is available from 7am-7pm. In addition, from 8pm-10:30pm every day, the Sentinel Room, above the Colleges 9/10 Dining Hall, is reserved for congregational prayers. Late night prayers will begin at 9:45 pm at that location. Weekly Friday prayers will continue to be held at the Cervantes & Velasquez Conference Room at 1:30 pm.

Testing Accommodations: Via https://registrar.ucsc.edu/soc/final-examinations.html:

“Given the diversity of religious practice within the campus community, academic and administrative units are encouraged to make reasonable accommodation when the schedule of a required campus event conflicts with an individual’s religious creed. It is the official policy of the University of California, Santa Cruz, to accommodate, without penalty, requests for alternate test or examination times in cases where the scheduled time for the test or examination violates a student’s religious creed, unless the request cannot be reasonably accommodated.”
