Welcome to the Division of Student Affairs and Success

Division of Student Success Team

Beginning July 1, 2020, the Division of Student Success is making important changes to better serve the needs of our students at UC Santa Cruz (UCSC). These changes were first announced to the campus community by Chancellor Cynthia Larive in May.

After thoughtful consideration, the Division of Student Success (DSS) is officially changing its name to the Division of Student Affairs and Success (DSAS). The name change first came as a recommendation from the Division of Student Success Review Task Force in February 2019.

The Task Force made three principal recommendations during its months-long review process: that DSS return to a more traditional student affairs organizational structure similar to other UC campuses; transition the Vice Provost position to a Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs position (VCSA) to reflect the division’s depth of student development and engagement; and align campus units around clearly communicated goals of student success, diversity, equity, inclusion, and access. The transition process is still unfolding, but the division is pleased to begin implementing the recommendations with a new name, as well as the appointment of an interim Vice Chancellor.

As Chancellor Larive mentioned in her May campus message, DSAS is also welcoming Jennifer Baszile, Ph.D., as the Interim Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Success, beginning July 1, 2020. More information about Jennifer’s background is available here.

In the coming months, the other recommendations from the Task Force will be reviewed, as DSAS decides collectively on the new direction of the organization. In the meantime, we’d like to take this opportunity to recognize everyone's hard work and dedication throughout this process. The staff and faculty in the division are the foundation of Student Affairs and Success, and we look forward to continuing this critical work and shaping our vision for the future.
