January 29, 2019

With eighteen years as a student affairs practitioner, Arao joins the Dean of Students office.

Hello Colleagues,

I am excited to announce that Brian Arao has been selected for the position of Associate Dean of Students and Chief of Staff.  In this role Brian will provide high level strategic planning and project management support in a variety of functional areas that support organizational effectiveness in the Dean of Students Office and Student Development & Engagement unit. As Associate Dean of Students and Chief of Staff, Brian will provide oversight to the Dean of Students administrative and programmatic operations, including management of daily operations of the Dean of Students Office and will supervise programs such as Slug Support and KZSC Radio.  Brian will also play a key role in supporting student leaders including those in the Student Volunteer Center. The Associate Dean of Students and Chief of Staff will be engaged in a broad range of student life issues, problem resolutions, policy review and development, and communications.

In his eighteen years as a student affairs practitioner, Brian has cultivated a clear understanding of his professional purpose and passion: to facilitate transformative and empowering educational experiences for all students, with an emphasis on those who have been marginalized within and excluded from the academy. Brian has creatively and consistently applied this approach to his work at and beyond UC Santa Cruz, and across a broad range of functional areas including residential life, student conduct, orientation, first year experience, and equity and inclusion initiatives.

Brian graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a Bachelor of Arts in Molecular, Cellular, and Development Biology.  He went on to graduate with a Master of Education in Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration from the University of Vermont and a Doctorate in International and Multicultural Education from the University of San Francisco.

I would like to express my appreciation and gratitude to the search committee for their service and engagement with the search process. Members of the committee include: Alex Belisario, Gary Dunn, De’Rael Edwards, Francisco Galvan, Lydia Jenkins-Sleczkowski, Bao Nhia Moua, Liz Moya, Lucy Rojas, and Jose Sanchez.

Brian will assume the role of Associate Dean of Students and Chief of Staff on February 1, 2019. Please join me in congratulating Brian on his appointment to this important leadership position.

In community,

Garrett
