The Student Health and Wellness unit includes medical, mental health, advocacy, education, and student health outreach services. The UCSC Student Health Services mission is to provide high quality services which promote physical and emotional well-being focused on the diverse needs of students.
SPOTLIGHT ON:
Healthcare Kiosks
Student Health Services now has healthcare kiosks on campus located at the Cowell Student Health Center and the Bay Tree Campus Store. These state-of-the-art machines provide UCSC students and the campus community with 24/7 access to healthcare supplies while promoting sexual health and overall well-being.
Our Departments
Campus Mobile Crisis Team (CMCT)
The UCSC Campus Mobile Crisis Team is the first program of its kind on a University of California campus. An accessible, student-friendly, and mobile form of mental health, the behavioral health team provides crisis response services to all members of the UCSC community, with a particular focus on providing support to the unique needs of our student population.
Center for Advocacy, Resources & Empowerment (CARE)
CARE advocates offer free confidential services for survivors of sexual assault, violence, and stalking, including crisis intervention, accompaniment, academic support, accommodations, safety planning, and case management.
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)
CAPS supports UCSC students with mental health services including counseling, therapy, psychiatry, groups and workshops, training programs, telehealth, and a mobile crisis team.
Medical Clinic
The UCSC Student Health Center medical clinic is staffed by board certified physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and nurses. Students are seen by appointment and in the Same Day Clinic.
Pharmacy
The UCSC Student Health Center Pharmacy offers over-the-counter health supplies, contraception, and prescriptions for UC SHIP students.
Student Health Outreach & Promotion (SHOP)
SHOP offers information, education, and support on alcohol, STIs, sexual health, and college life balance.
Leadership
John Bollard, M.A. (he/him)
Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Health and Wellness and Chief Well-Being Officer
In February 2023, John came to UC Santa Cruz after more than two decades of service at UC Los Angeles. During his 23-year tenure at UCLA, John held a number of positions – most of them in the Arthur Ashe Student Health and Wellness Center. There, John served as assistant director for business and administration, chief of operations and chief financial officer, and interim co-executive director. Most recently, John was the Executive Director and Chief Administrative Office for UCLA’s Division of Student Development and Health.
John’s educational background and previous professional experience well-equip him for the associate vice chancellor role and its many corresponding responsibilities. John holds two masters of arts degrees – one in education, with a concentration in higher education administration, from the University of San Francisco and the second in theology, with a concentration in ethics, from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley. John also attended California State University, Bakersfield, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy.
Shuyun David Lo, M.D.
Acting Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Health and Wellness and Chief Well-Being Officer
David is a board-certified psychiatrist who has worked in college mental health centers for more than 10 years. He attended medical school in Chicago and trained in psychiatry at University of California, San Francisco.
David treats students with a holistic attitude and considers medications, psychotherapy, and exercise as all part of the treatment. David is interested in the integration of mental health with physical health, at both the individual and system levels. He also has expertise in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder and in various psychotherapies.
